About the project

The transition to e-mobilitywill be implemented for the entire STI fleet and includes both the main depot at the ‘Schwäbis’ location as well as various external locationsin the region. The fleet conversion will take place as part of the regular vehicle procurement process, which occur every two years.

Initially, the focus of the first procurement round is on the Thun location at ‘Schwäbis’. Specialattention is being given to the fact that the current location will eventually be replaced by the new deposit location ‘Cremo’ in Steffisburg. However, the procurement of the electric buses and the construction of the new depot overlap in timeof timing. As a result, a large part of the fleet will have already been converted to e-buses before the new construction is completed. Consequently, the old ‘Schwäbis’ location will need to be temporarily equipped with charging infrastructure.

Our contribution

The goal of the study was to develop a concept that takes into account the limited space in the halls, the phased transition to battery-powered buses, and the limited duration of use at the ‘Schwäbis’ site. At least 48 parking spaces must be equipped with charging infrastructure, allowing charging with a power of 150 kW via CCS connectors.

The concept considers both the high requirements for availability and the possibility of reusing the charging equipment to be installed at the ‘Schwäbis’ site at the planned new ‘Cremo’ location.

Following the development of the concept, our Enotrac team calculated and compiled the necessary costs its implementation. Based on our concept study, STI was able to set the course for the next steps to ensure that the charging infrastructure is available in time for the commissioning of the first electric buses.
