The 10.36 km long rack railway and panoramic line connecting Montreux with Les Rochers-de-Naye is one of the region’s most iconic railways. Climbing from an altitude of 408 m to 2,042 m above sea level, it offers a unique travel experience and serves as a key element of the region’s transport infrastructure. To ensure reliable operation in the long term and to meet future operational requirements, the traction power supply system is undergoing a comprehensive modernisation.
About the project
As part of the modernisation of the Montreux–Les Rochers-de-Naye railway line, the Montreux–Vevey–Riviera Railway (MVR) is renewing its traction power supply infrastructure. The three existing substations, currently operating at 900 V DC and approaching the end of their service life, will be completely replaced. In addition, a fourth substation will be constructed at Caux to strengthen the line’s power supply and support future operational requirements. The new substations are being designed to accommodate the planned upgrade of the traction power supply system to 1’500 V DC as part of the overall modernisation programme.
The substation renewal forms an integral part of the comprehensive modernisation of the Montreux–Les Rochers-de-Naye line. Other key elements of the programme include the introduction of new rolling stock, an increase in transport capacity, and further improvements to passenger service quality.
To support the implementation of this project, MVR commissioned Enotrac to manage the tendering process (SIA Phase 41) for the supply and installation of four new traction substations.
Our contribution
Enotrac provided technical leadership for the tendering process for the four traction substations, drawing on its extensive expertise in railway engineering, infrastructure projects and public procurement.
Based on the preliminary studies and design work completed during SIA Phase 32, Enotrac prepared all technical documentation required for the successful preparation and execution of the tendering procedure.
The main services provided by Enotrac included:
- Preparation of the technical and organisational specifications for the traction substations, as well as the feeder and return cables;
- Coordination, review and integration of third-party documents forming part of the technical tender documentation;
- Alignment of technical requirements with the operations and maintenance teams, the client and the various project stakeholders, including the distribution network operator and the specialists responsible for civil works and grounding.
Enotrac supported MVR throughout the entire tendering process. This included responding to bidders’ queries, organising site visits and clarification meetings, conducting the technical evaluation of the submitted bids, and preparing the award recommendation report.
Through close collaboration with MVR and all project stakeholders, Enotrac helped ensure a transparent and efficient tendering process. The company supported the selection of solutions that best met the project’s technical, economic and operational requirements, thereby contributing to the successful delivery of this key modernisation programme.
