About the project
VBZ aims to conduct its own network studies for Zurich’s tram and trolleybus network. The objective is to optimise the existing traction power infrastructure and to determine the impact of future operational developments at an early stage, enabling these insights to be incorporated into the planning process.
Enotrac’s network simulation and calculation tool, Fabel, provides the ideal software solution to support these objectives.
The foundation for the efficient use of Fabel is an accurate model of the existing tram and trolleybus system, including the infrastructure, electrical network, rolling stock and timetable. Based on this comprehensive digital representation, the tool supports informed decision-making and efficient planning processes.
Among other applications, Fabel can be used to design new traction power supply installations and components, optimise existing infrastructure, and support the planning of renewal, network expansion and extension projects. The software also enables the evaluation of energy-saving measures, the identification of cost-reduction opportunities, and the analysis of specific electrical operating conditions. In doing so, it helps improve both passenger safety and the reliability of the transport infrastructure.
Enotrac’s Fabel software is a sophisticated network simulation tool certified in accordance with EN 50641. It enables VBZ to optimise the performance of its traction power supply network by improving load management and reducing energy consumption, thereby increasing operational efficiency and contributing to the achievement of Zurich’s sustainability goals.
Our contribution
As part of this collaboration, Enotrac developed a bespoke simulation model for VBZ. Thanks to the latest advancements in Fabel, even large-scale and complex map-based transport networks can now be modelled with a high level of detail and efficiency. In addition, the direct import of timetable and real-time operational data from GTFS databases significantly simplifies the creation of realistic simulation scenarios.
With a Fabel licence, the VBZ team has access to the full range of Fabel modules and functionalities. Supported by comprehensive training, VBZ staff can independently model and analyse scenarios, compare optimisation strategies and make well-informed decisions for future-oriented network planning and development.
