About the project

Schwerin Public Transport (NVS) operates a 41 km tram network that’s served by a fleet of 30 SN 2001 trams. These vehicles, which were entered service at the beginning of the millennium, were originally fitted with traction and control technology from Kiepe Electric.

This extensive modernisation project aims to ensure the operation of these trams for the next 20 years. It focuses on several key electrical components:

  • Replacing the traction converters (the traction motors will be retained).
  • Replacing the on-board power converters, including the battery chargers and auxiliary power converters.
  • Targeted replacement of vehicle control system.
  • Adapting the driver’s console display.
  • Replacing the driver’s cab air conditioning unit.
  • Integrating new passenger compartment air conditioning, which will replace the existing roof heaters.

Kiepe Electric and their subcontractors will again be responsible for supplying the new equipment and carrying out the necessary conversion work.

Our contribution

Enotrac was commissioned to specify the electrical equipment for the Schwerin tram modernisation project. Our role also included providing support with supplier selection, assembly and commissioning. Furthermore, conducting type tests and acceptance procedures were part of our brief.

Replacing the electronic traction and control technology within an existing vehicle is a complex undertaking. The new equipment will not simply be an off-the-shelf product; it needs to be adapted to the existing constraints and interfaces. Therefore, the tender documents must meticulously prepared to ensure the most suitable supplier for the new equipment can be selected.
