Over the last few years, the introduction of new rolling stock, heavier trains and shorter headway have increased load on the traction power supply of the Matterhorn Gotthard railway (MGBahn). Since this trend is set to continue into the future, the traction power network must be continuously upgraded and modernised. To ensure optimal investment in conjunction with future schemes, a strategic plan for this reinforcement was required. The load calculations of the 11 kV / 16.7 Hz traction power network carried out by ENOTRAC served as the basis for establishing the scope and priorities of future schemes. For this study, the entire MGBahn network from Brig over Andermatt to Disentis and from Brig to Zermatt was modelled in detail using the simulation software FABEL.

Furthermore, based on the simulation results, ENOTRAC developed the feeding and return conductor concept with a new overhead conductor rail for the Furka tunnel and evaluated the feed from Massaboden substation, analysed outage scenarios, determined the whole-network feeding and projection concept and conducted several studies for the future energy consumption and the measures for its reduction.
