As part of the study for implementing the Swiss regulation of protection against non-ionising radiation on electrical railways, measurements of magnetic fields were conducted in the entire area around a railway line. For the exact positioning of the measuring tools, a crane wagon and a specially manufactured measuring bridge were used. The exact location of the measuring devices were determined by a GPS-system. The measurement of magnetic fields were completed with voltage measurements of all supply and return conductors in the railway system. At the same time, the magnetic fields were also simulated in computer models. The results of the magnetic field measurements and the computer models showed a good correlation. Later, ENOTRAC was substantially involved in the preparation of a draft guideline for the Federal office of transport and the Federal office for the Environment.
