BERNMOBIL power system study

The urban public transport company of the city of Bern (BERNMOBIL) tasked ENOTRAC with simulating the tram and trolleybus city network. The aim was two-fold: assess the existing power supply network and provide instructions and specifications for future projects. The simulation model, which was created with FABEL, has then been used for various BERNMOBIL projects, such as Tram Bern West or Tram Region Bern. The following points were considered:

  • How to achieve a quality power supply network
  • What is the potential for optimization
  • Rectifier and feeder loadings
  • Optimizing the location of new rectifier stations
  • Assessment of the power supply during maintenance works
  • Thermal load of the catenary wire

Various validation measurements were used to check the plausibility of the FABEL results. Therefore, the current and tension of two rectifier stations were measured over a longer period of time and compared with that of the simulation.
