Driving without automatic train protection system

ENOTRAC carried out a generic risk analysis in collaboration with the governing body of historic railways in Switzerland (HECH). The selected methods were based on applicable standards, especially EN 50126. The generic risk analysis was reviewed by the infrastructure managers SBB, SOB and BLS and was submitted to the Swiss Federal Office of Transport for approval. With this generic risk analysis, it is possible to define the necessary risk mitigating measures for specific train routes of historic rolling stock, such that the risk can be kept to a tolerable level despite the lack of automatic train protection.

A similar risk analysis was carried out for the operation of the snow plough of SOB, a private railway undertaking in the South-East of Switzerland. All hazards related to the operation of this rarely used snow plough were identified and the necessary risk mitigations were defined. On the basis of this risk analysis, the Swiss Federal Office of Transport granted an exception to operate this snow plough.
